Wisdom Teeth are usually the final teeth to erupt, emerging throughout the late teens to early twenties. In the majority of cases they erupt with little or no complications. However when complications do arise the common solution is the extraction of the problematic wisdom teeth to avoid further pain, discomfort and infection.
Complications usually arise when the teeth become impacted or only partially erupt. Impacted teeth occur when there is not enough room for the new teeth to erupt or they erupt at a strange angle. This causes the tooth to grow into the surrounding teeth, ligament and jaw bone, resulting in pain, discomfort, crowding and eventual jaw misalignment. Partially erupted teeth are also problematic as they leave a small pocket of tissue exposed and vulnerable to painful and recurrent infection.
The most effective treatment for these issues is the removal of one or all of the wisdom teeth. At Council Avenue Dental & Implant Centre, Dr Wong is particularly experienced in the area of exactions, including wisdom teeth. To ensure that your treatment is achieved with the maximum level of efficiency and comfort, Council Avenue Dental offers the option of sleep dentist via Intravenous sedation for more complicated procedures or particularly anxious patients.
The recovery period for these procedures generally requires a few days of rest, consuming soft foods and avoiding hot liquids, alcohol and smoking. Patients may also experience some swelling and residual bleeding, which is a normal occurrence and should subside rather quickly.
